Utah-based outdoor gear manufacturer collaborates with Wasatch Mountain Institute and Outdoor Auntie to host first-time camping experience for families of Black youth.
SALT LAKE CITY, May 15, 2024 – Teton, a leading outdoor gear manufacturer renowned for comfortable, dependable products that are easy to set up and easy on the wallet, today announced its partnership with Outdoor Auntie to support Camping in Color, a program designed to create meaningful experiences in nature for Black youth and their families. The company will be donating sleeping bags, tents and backpacks to the program.
“We introduce families of color to camping one tent at a time,” says Outdoor Auntie, one of the operations team leads for Camping in Color. “Historically, Black families have lacked access, culturally competent training and gear to safely enjoy outdoor recreation.
Teton has been a valuable partner in bringing about change by providing quality gear that’s easy to use and perfect for beginners to quickly learn to love outdoor recreation.”
The gear donated will be used in the program’s annual camping trips, which started in 2023 with an outing to the Wasatch Mountains. Teton is joined by the U Sustainability Office, Curly Me SLC, Wasatch Mountain Institute and REI in donating to this cause and lifting financial constraints.

Camping in Color is funded by a University of Utah’s Nature & Human Health grant, which was awarded to Wasatch Mountain Institute to build community with diverse outdoor leaders and families. Established in 2022 by Sydney Murray and Hillary Lambert through Wasatch Mountain Institute, the program leverages gear and resources from a network of Utah’s leading companies and organizations to give first-time campers the best experience possible.
