FAQs

Can I use a stove in any Teton tent?
Only use a stove in a Teton canvas tent with a built-in stove jack. Never use a stove in a tent without a stove jack, including Teton Mountain Ultra and/or Vista tents, which aren’t made for stove use.

What size stove can I use with my tent?
In most cases, a small stove is more than enough to heat the interior. A stove that’s too large, or a fire that’s too hot, can damage your tent and create a fire hazard.  Teton does not currently recommend a specific stove brand. Burn dry, natural wood only, and follow your stove manufacturer’s instructions. Stay tuned for the Teton Kilimanjaro Stove, designed for use with Teton canvas tents and coming soon.

What size stovepipe can I use with my tent?
The stove jack in Teton Canvas Tents fit stovepipes up to 5.6" in diameter. As much as possible keep the pipe centered in the stove jack so it doesn’t lean against or touch the edge of the jack.

Is the canvas in my tent flammable?
Canvas can burn, so it’s important to follow fire safety practices whenever you use a heat source inside your tent. Keep heat sources at least 18" from the walls and roof, keep sparks and flames away from the canvas, and always provide ventilation.

How do I use a stove safely in my tent?

  • Use a working carbon monoxide detector and always provide ventilation.
  • Never sleep or leave the tent while the stove is burning.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water nearby.
  • Inspect and clear your stovepipe and spark arrestor before each use.
  • Let the stove cool completely before taking down your tent.

What is the maximum stovepipe temperature allowed at the stove jack?
Keep the stovepipe below 400°F where it passes through the stove jack, with brief peaks of no more than 450°F (a few minutes at most). Your stove jack is made from silicone-coated fiberglass, a heat-resistant material used across the canvas tent industry, and these limits give it a safety margin. If you notice smoke, softening or melting at the stove jack, stop using the stove, let it cool and contact Teton.

How can I measure the temperature of my stovepipe?
Some customers use a magnetic stovepipe thermometer, placed on the pipe just below the stove jack, to see actual temperatures and adjust the fire before damage occurs.

I think my stove is getting too hot. What can I do?
Close the stove’s air intake and damper to reduce the airflow and slow the fire. Avoid opening the stove door, which adds oxygen and can release embers. Don’t add more fuel until the temperature decreases.

My stovepipe is glowing. Is that bad?
Yes. A glowing red or orange stove or pipe means the fire is far too hot for safe use in your tent. Close the air intake and damper, don’t add fuel, and let the stove cool. Next time, use less fuel and keep the fire lower.

Embers from the top of my stovepipe are landing on my tent. Will my tent catch fire?
Embers can burn holes in canvas and can start a fire in nearby dry leaves or grass. Use a spark arrestor on your stovepipe won’t stop every ember, especially from a hot, aggressively stoked fire. Keep your fire moderate, and extinguish embers that land on the tent or the ground immediately.  Burn holes from stove use aren’t covered by Teton’s warranty and can affect your tent’s water resistance.

Does the tent floor have built-in heat protection, or do I need a stove mat?
The tent floor isn’t designed to withstand heat from a stove or embers. Always place a fire-resistant stove mat under your stove to protect the floor from heat and from embers that fall while you load or stoke the fire. Put out any embers immediately, even on the mat. Stay tuned for the Teton Kilimanjaro Fire Mat, coming soon.

Can the black ring around the stove jack touch my stovepipe?
The black ring is made of heat-resistant silicone. It can fit loosely or snugly around your stovepipe, depending on your setup. Keep the stovepipe below 400°F where it passes through the jack; higher temperatures can damage the ring and may void your warranty. If the ring smokes, softens or melts, stop using the stove and contact Teton.
